The Post-40 Woman’s Way To Eat July 27, 2007

The body’s slowing post-40 metabolism means women need fewer calories to maintain the same weight.  Additionally, studies show that as women mature, drastic dieting doesn’t work as well.

Here are some post-40 hints from July’s Ladies Home Journal….

No more skipping breakfast!

Breakfast is the MOST important meal of the day.  It gives you energy, keeps you from getting hungry before lunchtime and helps you concentrate.

Eat less, but more often!

Instead of three large meals a day, consume the same number of calories in five or six smaller ones, two to three hours apart.

Because small meals also give you a slow, steady supply of food, your body is spared the insulin surge of a huge meal.

Cut calories!

After age 40, women should consume 250 less calories a day to maintain weight, and at least 500 fewer to lose.

Research shows postmenopausal women who both diet and exercise improve their insulin profile more than women who do either alone.
